Debate on the situation of gender equality and the empowerment of women in the global era

On the eve of the proclamation of the new Sustainable Development Goals

Monday, 21st September. On 25th September, the UN General Assembly will announce the new Millennium Sustainable Development Goals, which will make up the big global agenda until 2030.

In the same UN session on the 27th, the heads of state present will hold a meeting on gender equality and women's empowerment that will culminate with a review of the Beijing Platform for Action, Beijing +20. As you may recall, the Beijing Platform was established in the Chinese city 20 years ago at a summit attended by thousands of women from around the world. It was a huge boost to gender equality and the policies that support it.

On the eve of these momentous sessions of the international community, the Women for Africa Foundation (Mujeres por África) and the Anastasio de Gracia Foundation, FITEL, will hold a meeting next Thursday 24th at the Ateneo building in Madrid under the title of "Women in equality. A pending challenge for global democracy". We will review the situation of women in the world 20 years after Beijing and reflect on their future.

During the event, which will be introduced by the director of the AGFITEL Foundation, Felix Gonzalez, the journalist Soledad Gallego-Diaz will interview Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, the president of Women for Africa, and will then chair a discussion with the participation of Maria Angeles Duran, professor of sociology and researcher into the work of women; Almudena Fontecha, Secretary for Equality in UGT (a Spanish national trade union); and Inmaculada Montalbán, a judge and specialist in gender violence.
