Monday, 15th December, 2014. The jury of the ‘2nd African Women in Spain’ Contest held by the Women for Africa Foundation has awarded the first prize of € 1,000 for the photograph “The Virgin of Mali” by Jesús Ángel Gabaldón. The picture was taken in the town of Recas in the province of Toledo. It shows two women and a boy from Mali in front of a painting of the Virgin of the Olive, the patron saint of the town in Castile-La Mancha, where it was taken.

It is a curious fact that the town of Recas is known as “Little Mali” because of the large number of people from that country who have been living for years in this town in the area of La Sagra, Toledo.

The jury, made up of the photographer Alfredo Cáliz, the photographer and gallery owner Blanca Berlin, and Ángeles Puerta as representative for the Women For Africa Foundation’s Board of Trustees, unanimously chose the winning photo “because it uses a bold, highly artistic composition to achieve one of the goals sought by this contest: To graphically document the daily reality of African women living in our country.”

The second prize of € 500 went to the black and white photograph “Braiding Hair II” by Sara Martín. The picture was taken in Madrid and is part of a series that shows in detail this practice that many African women continue to use as a symbol of their identity.

The jury also decided to award a consolation prize with no financial award to the photo entitled “Open to the World” by Laura Perea Londoño for its artistic merit. It was taken in the city of Barcelona.

Nearly 400 photographs were received in this second edition of the contest, four times as many as last year, and 122 people took part. The Women for Africa Foundation, and especially its president, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, congratulates the winners and thanks all who took part, encouraging them to continue doing so in future editions.

The ‘African Women in Spain’ photo contest is part of the project with the same name whose main aim is to promote greater and better mutual understanding with the African women who have settled in our country.
