  • Born on 15th June 1949 in Valencia.
  • Law degree from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and exam passed for the Bachelor’s degree in law at the Universidad Central of Barcelona with a grade of Outstanding. Specialist in Community Law from the University of Strasbourg. Magistrate, qualifying in the first position. Honoris Causa Doctorate from the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo.
  •  Chief of Staff to the Minister of Justice.
  • Director General of Services at the Ministry of Justice.
  •  Member of the Supreme Judicial Council.
  • Secretary of State for Justice.
  • Member of the Spanish Parliament   from 1996 to 2010.
  • Deputy Secretary (1997-1998) and Secretary General (1998-2004) of the Socialist Parliamentary Group.
  •  First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Presidency and Spokesperson from April 2004 to October 2010.
  • Permanent Counsellor of the Spanish State Council from November 2010.
  • Active collaborator with the feminist movement. In 1984, she joined the first Governing Board of the Institute for Women and participated in drawing up the first Plan for Equal Opportunities.
  • Member of the Civil Society Advisory UN Women
  •  She has been an associate lecturer in labour law at the Universidad Central of Barcelona and Madrid’s Universidad Complutense, as well as lecturer-tutor at UNED.
  • She is the author of books and essays on labour law, human rights and the Council of Europe.
