Africa with an “Ñ”

NOMBRE DEL PROYECTO: Africa with an “Ñ”

PAÍS/CIUDAD: Ivory Coast / Abidjan

DURACIÓN: 2013 and onwards

There are currently 500 million Spanish speakers and about 21 million people studying it in over 100 countries, of whom over a million are in Africa. Encouraging the use of Spanish as a development tool for the continent, and especially for African women, is the aim of the Africa with an ‘Ñ’ project.

To achieve this, the Women for Africa Foundation has launched different lines of work such as collaboration with Spanish universities so that African women students of Spanish can have access to programmes to perfect the language and to experience linguistic immersion in our country; organising the African Hispanists’ Congress in Ivory Coast in 2014; and creating the Africa with an ‘Ñ’ literary prize aimed at African women writers, which has already held its first edition.

The foundation is also seeking collaboration from Spanish publishers to supply books and publications for Spanish departments and libraries in some African universities.
